James Pearce and Kate Burlaga report on the PGMOL's release of the full audio clip of communication between the on-field officials
The referees' body the PGMOL have released the full audio clip of the communication between the on-field and VAR officials during the Tottenham v Liverpool match last weekend, which led to the incorrect offside decision against Luis Díaz not being overturned.
The audio recording related to Liverpool's goal, which was disallowed for offside after Díaz was adjudged to have been in an offside position when the ball was played to him by Trent Alexander-Arnold. However, replays showed that Díaz was onside, and Liverpool were unhappy with the decision.
The audio clip reveals that the assistant VAR, Daniel, initially agreed with the on-field decision to disallow the goal, but then changed his mind after reviewing the footage again. However, the VAR, Darren England, did not agree with Daniel's assessment and stuck with the original decision. This led to a lengthy delay in the game, and Liverpool were eventually denied a clear goalscoring opportunity.
The PGMOL has since apologized for the error, and has said that it will be reviewing its procedures to ensure that such an incident does not happen again.
